Burns to the feet are particularly challenging because of their high risk of infection, complex contours and constant exposure to movement and pressure.
In this case, the patient sustained partial-thickness burns to both feet during a fire-walking ritual. Bioactiv® Matrix was applied to the burned areas of the feet, while the toes were treated with petroleum-jelly gauze as a comparator.
The fully synthetic, bioactive skin substitute conformed to the wound surface and supported tissue regeneration without sutures, staples or skin grafting.
By Day 2, the toes treated with petroleum-jelly gauze showed infection, excessive moisture and slough. In contrast, the areas treated with Bioactiv® Matrix showed early signs of healing by Day 4, despite the challenging wound location and the presence of Pseudomonas infection in the adjacent toes.
The Bioactiv® Matrix-treated areas continued to demonstrate progressive healing over the following days, illustrating its potential to support tissue regeneration while helping clinicians manage wounds in areas with a high risk of infection.
Bioactiv®Matrix conformed to the complex contours of the feet and was applied withoutsutures, staples or tape, simplifying treatment of a difficult wound location.
Antimicrobials such as acetic acid and iodine can be used in conjunction with BioactivMatrix, without damage to product or slowing of treatment.
Outcomes shown are from an individual clinical case and may not be representative of every patient.
